Ethiopian girl with beads

Here is what I'm working on this week.
This is an Ethiopian girl based on a fantastic photo by Aliza Rubinstein I found with a random search on Picasaweb

My sketch

Ethiopian girl with beads

I still have a long way to go. The beads take a lot of time but are an important part of the composition.
I plan to make her face more graceful, and add details to her stomach and back.

If it looks good when it's completed I will probably have it cast into bronze.

Wax cast model approved - Jamie

I have approved the wax for my sculpture of "Jamie".

Now the foundry can make the ceramic shell from the wax copy.
The wax is melted out and filled with the bronze.  This is known as the "lost wax" process.

Domino sleeping

This is a typical starting point.
I use the reference photo to develop the sculpture.
From here, I will refine details, hollow the forms for proper drying, and let it dry for a couple of weeks before firing.

After the first "bisque" firing I will sometimes add glazes to match the colors.

I'm thinking of doing an informal DIY "sculpture" open house. Nothing fancy, I probably will just set up some tables and clay in may garage and have people drop in to make something. Everyone welcome. Please post here, or click the "Maybe" or button on the event page if you are at all interested so I can decide if enough people want to do it.

Nude or "boudoir" sculptures

I do all sorts of sculptures, including tasteful nudes or "boudoir".

Let me know what you want, usually I do a small, fast model to work out the pose. This "macquette" helps us to visualize what the final sculpture will look like. This part of the process is done at no cost.

Sculptures from photos

Many of us have treasured family photos sitting, forgotten, in boxes (or hard-drives) somewhere.
I can make a sculpture based on your photos, capturing that moment in true 3d.

Naturally I prefer to work from a live model, but it's not always possible. Particularly with kids and pets, a few photos, taken at multiple angles might be the best way to capture a likeness and to freeze the moment.

The cost for these sculptures is widely variable. The sculpture of "Jamie" above would cost about $500 but his mother wants the final sculpture to be cast in bronze which adds about $1,500

Please feel free to contact me with any sculptural ideas or inspirations you might have.

Models needed

I occasionaly hire models for a particular commission or project.
Typically this involves about 3 hours of live sculpting and/or photos. About a month later I often want another hour or two to refine details.

$20/hour clothed , $45/hour for nude

If you would like to model please contact me.

I make sculptures of things, people, or ideas of interest to me. If you have something (or someone) you want sculpted let me know.
* Pets
* Kids, spouse, friend
* Memorials, Awards
* Artistic ideas

I can work from your photos, but it's best for me to take the photos so I can be sure to capture a good likeness in clay.
The final sculpture can be in high fired ceramic clay, or bronze.
